Multiple Sclerosis MS

Our mission is to reduce the progression of MS-related disability and improve the quality of life of patients and families living with MS. We offer an integrated wellness approach using multidisciplinary care

Migraine Headache

We offer breakthrough treatments for migraines including FDA-approved therapies to prevent migraines and acute abortive treatment that works fast and lasts with Botox injections for chronic daily headaches. We personalize your care to find what works best for you

Stroke

We provide prevention, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with a wide range of cerebrovascular disorders. We serve patients who have just suffered a stroke or cerebral hemorrhage. A stroke specialist is available to provide acute stroke treatment at Howard County General Hospital, and follow-up stroke care in our stroke clinic.

Dementia

Diagnose and treat memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, and stroke to reduce disease progression

Pain Management

Treat neck pain, back pain, and other pain disorders using cutting-edge interventional procedures

Neuropathy

Treat all types of nerve damage, including sensory, motor and autonomic nerve neuropathy. After EMG/Nerve conduction diagnostic tests, treatments include medical management with IVIG Infusion to slow the progression of neuropathy

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

At the Center for Brain and Neuro Care, we will do full comprehensive testing and evaluation for Restless Leg Syndrome and offer effective treatments

Shingles

We will evaluate and treat you for pain that can remain after you have had shingles. This is called postherpetic neuralgia

Dr. Gunawardane earned her medical degree from St George’s University School of Medicine, Grenada, West Indies.  She graduated in 1990, leading her class for clinical excellence. She completed her residency in Internal medicine at Coney Island Hospital in New York, and then did her neurology training and a fellowship in cerebrovascular disease/stroke at the University of Maryland Medical Center

She completed her Neurology residency and graduated from the University of MD, where she completed a Stroke fellowship and joined the faculty in 2001, working as junior faculty in the Department of Neurology

Sees patients at the new Center for Brain and Neuro Care. This premier comprehensive Center is dedicated to providing prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care, leading to the best possible outcomes for patients in her specialty areas

TEACHING

Dr. Gunawardane was an assistant professor of neurology at the UM School of Medicine for 7 years before going into private practice in 2006.  She continues to deliver lectures to patients on Multiple Sclerosis and seizures

Her compassionate care provides personalized treatment plans that are individually tailored to enable each patient to live a full and productive life.  When developing treatment plans for her patients, she focuses on a multidisciplinary approach based on each patient’s individual needs

She has specialized training in neurosonology – the study of imaging tests crucial in interpreting and diagnosing cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke, dementia, and embolism. She also offers specialty treatments such as infusions, EMG/ Nerve conduction, and vascular studies
