Her compassionate care provides personalized treatments plans that are individually tailored to enable each patient to live a full and productive life.  When developing treatment plans for her patients, she focuses on a multidisciplinary approach based on each patient’s individual needs.

Clinical specialties

Dr. Gunawardane specializes in Multiple sclerosis, headache and other complex neurological disorders. She has specialized training in neurosonology – the study of imaging tests crucial in interpreting and diagnosing cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke, dementia and embolism. She also offers specialty treatments such as infusions, EMG/ Nerve conduction, and vascular studies.

Neurology residency – University of Maryland

Dr. Gunawardane earned her medical degree from St Georges University School of Medicine, Grenada, West Indies.  She graduated in 1990 leading her class for clinical excellence. She completed her residency in Internal medicine at Coney Island Hospital in New York, and then did her neurology training and a fellowship in cerebrovascular disease/stroke at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

She completed her Neurology residency and graduated from University of MD, where she completed a Stroke fellowship and joined the faculty in 2001, worked as junior faculty in the Dept of Neurology.

Teaching

Dr. Gunawardane was an assistant professor of neurology at the UM School of Medicine for 7 years before going into private practice in 2006.  She continues to deliver lectures to patients on Multiple Sclerosis and seizures.
